I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but NI's offering a new course at NI-Week this year: LabVIEW Object-Oriented Programming System Design. The topics look pretty good, including an introduction to OOD with UML. Rumour has it that the course won't just concentrate on LVOOP, but also include some Endevo stuff too thumbup1.gif

I can confirm the rumour :-) Since I'm teaching it.
The course is on Sunday and Monday, so YOU won't miss the any of the NI-week days.
Cheers,
Mikael

That's awesome - there's no-one better to teach the course!

PS: Mikael taught me GOOP many years ago, and is not only very knowledgable in OO, but is also a LabVIEW stalwart, a Certified LabVIEW Architect, the man behind the Endevo GOOP Development Toolkit and UML Modeller (written completely in LabVIEW), and an all-around great bloke!

It says that all that is required is LabVIEW basics.
Will this be too basic of stuff to keep me interested?
I'm sure Mikael is a great instructor, but if the material isn't heavy duty I may need to bring extra coffee.

Probably this course is below your threshold of interest. It's for people who know LabVIEW but not LabVOOP. You already know the how and the why of LabVIEW classes. Send a flunky of yours and tell them to report back to you any interesting tidbits. :-)

On the other hand, block off Thursday afternoon... I'm presenting a session then that should be more your speed.

Hmmm... now I'm all confused. NI's web page says Basics is enough. but on the PDF spec of the course says Intermediate or better required.

Maybe I should have waited for the cruise instead of signing up for sun-mon

Hi

I just came back from New Zealand where I held the OO course in Auckland at a company.

During the first day of the course I go through the principle of OO-Design and Analysis and objects by flow and references.

The second day we create a whole test system application from a problem description, using UML class diagram and then we implement it.

I like to customize the course as much as possible depending on the student needs, so I normally like to know what kind of systems the students are developing.
Cheers,

Mikael

Well I suppose I'll be the first to chime in and give some direction.
I have 2 major concerns and confusions on how to handle.

Dealing with a variety of instruments of varying and similar types and how to deal w/ different but overlapping configurations
and secondly, dealing w/ sets of objects when trying to handle complex data sets in which the sets have similar and overlapping properties but I don't want to replicate datasets due to size.

Got any slides for that?

Norm: I take it back. I saw the full cirruiculum for the first time today. While I do think it will start off slow for you, I think there may be useful stuff in there come day 2.

Hi Mikael

Two questions:
1) Does the course you are teaching hand out an NI Manual, a custom one, or no manual?
2) Are there any plans that you be teaching this course over East in Australia any time soon?

Cheers mate

I think you're referring to LabVIEW Classes - State of the Art. Will this be a rehash of the [excellent] presentation you gave at the Phoenix Dev Day, or is this a new presentation?

No, we're talking about the new 2-day course (Sunday and Monday, so you've already missed it by the time you read this) that is now part of the NI training course catalog.

As for my presentation:
a) Yes, it will be largely the same stuff I presented at Phoenix Dev Days (I used you guys as guinea pigs -- sorry!)
b) Having said that, it will be in a completely different and much easier to digest form factor, so you might at least want to look over a copy of the new presentation on your NI Week DVD. Having said that...

FOR ANYONE WHO WASN'T AT THE Phoenix or Salt Lake City Dev Days presentations in April of this year:
I am guaranteeing this years "LabVIEW Classes -- State of the Art" presentation will be the best presentation yet on why, when and how you should be using LabVIEW classes. In this session, we will hear about the software woes of one small measurement company, and how they overcome their troubles using LabVIEW classes and object-oriented design techniques. In a sequence of seven mini apps, attendees will see LabVIEW classes solve a wide range programming problems. Or, to put it another way, if this presentation doesn't convince you to adopt LabVIEW classes, nothing will.

After this, the only excuse you'll have for not adopting LabVIEW classes is that even in 8.6 they aren't available on RT and embedded targets (and don't bet on that excuse lasting much longer... ninja.gif ).

Great! Since 75% of my projects are RT, I'll be ready to hit the streets running when LabVIEW is ready.
